At Optera, we are currently supporting our local branch of Samaritans; a charity that helps regular people going through difficult times by phone, email and text message. They provide a confidential listening service to hundreds of thousands of callers every year 24 hours a day, 365 days a year from their 200+ network of local branches.
The vision of the charity is that fewer people die by suicide each year. They aim to achieve this by providing a safe place where people can share their thoughts and worries before getting to the point where life feels overwhelming.
Male suicide rates are currently at their highest level since 2001. More than 6000 people die by suicide every year in the UK and nearly 80% of those are men. Samaritans are committed to actively encouraging men across the UK to talk to them and raise awareness of the problem.
Our partnership with Samaritans not only enables us to raise funds for the charity, but also to raise much-needed awareness of their service, especially in the key demographics most at risk of taking their own lives. While the building industry is moving towards greater gender equality, we have by tradition been a male-dominated industry. We see a strong beneficial link by aligning with Samaritans and supporting their work.
